AVAILABLE VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS

 

SHELVER

Importance of Position: Ensures that library items are returned to their correct place in the library so that patrons will be able to locate them.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Library
  • Willingness to work with assigned trainers
  • Physical ability to bend, stretch, lift books, move shelving cart and bend in order to see information on book spines
  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically

 

Responsible To: Library Volunteer Coordinator (209)754-6567

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Successful completion of a two – three hour training on shelving.
  2. Follow instructions in Shelver’s Manual.
  3. Assist with organizing books on the carts before shelving begins.
  4. Notify Volunteer Coordinator of problems or suggestions for improved shelving.

 

Training Provided:

An orientation to the Library and a two to three hour training on shelving as well as specific training on the Dewey Decimal System. Each volunteer will receive a copy of the Shelver’s Manual. Staff will always be available to answer additional questions.

FRONT DESK WORKER

Importance of Position:The Front Desk Worker is the first person with whom our patrons will be in contact. Front Desk Workers will work accurately checking in and out items for our patrons. They will be vital in establishing a good rapport with our community.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Library
  • Willingness to work with assigned trainers
  • Willingness and ability to learn some simple computer functions
  • Physically able to stand for periods of time
  • Ability to work closely with the public
  • Willingness to be confidential with patron information

 

Responsible To: Library Volunteer Coordinator (209)754-6567

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Successfully complete an extended training
  2. Reliably work several hours a week on an assigned day
  3. Notify the Library when you are not able to work
  4. Read through the Volunteer Manual at your leisure

 

Training Provided: Complete a three to four hour training period each week for approximately a month (dependent upon the confidence of the person.) Staff will always be available to assist with more complicated procedures. The Volunteer Manual will be available at front counter at all times.

LIBRARY MAINTENANCE

Importance of Position: Ensures that our Library floors are vacuumed, shelves are kept clean and dust free, table tops are clean and book jackets are clean.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Library
  • Willingness to work with assigned trainer
  • Physical ability to bend, stretch, push a vacuum and lift small items

Responsibilities:

  1. Successful completion of a training period
  2. Willingness to come in for assigned work periods
  3. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you have suggestions or problems
  4. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator when you are unable to come in

 

Training Provided: An orientation to the Library and a short training period. Staff will always be available to answer questions or give assistance.

COMPUTER CLEANER

Importance of Position: Ensures that our Library computers are cleaned properly thereby enhancing the life of the equipment.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Library
  • Willingness to work independently
  • Physical ability to use hands and arms to clean

 

Responsible To: Library Volunteer Coordinator (209)754-6567

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Successful completion of an orientation and training period
  2. Willingness to come in for assigned work periods
  3. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you have suggestions or notice problems
  4. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator when you are unable to come in

 

Training Provided: An orientation to the Library and a short training on the cleaning of the computers. Staff will always be available to answer questions or give assistance.

CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES

Importance of Position: Ensures that our Library has volunteers who will provide educational and appropriate activities for the children.

 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to the mission of the Library
  • Ability to work with children
  • Ability to read and tell stories to children

Responsibilities:

  1. Successful completion of an orientation and training period
  2. Willingness to come in for assigned work periods
  3. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator if you have suggestions or notice problems
  4. Notify the Volunteer Coordinator when you are unable to come in

 

Training Provided: An orientation to the Library and a short training on the types of children’s activities the Library provides. Staff will always be available to answer questions or give assistance.
