POSITION SUMMARY

Deputies needed to  perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; patrol assigned areas and enforce state and local laws; conduct preliminary investigations of misdemeanor and felony crimes; perform bailiff duties; and do related work as required. 

VALID POST CERTIFICATE REQUIRED

Post September 11, 2001 Military and Veterans Strongly encouraged to apply.

Deputy Sheriff I

Under supervision, to serve in a training capacity as a field law enforcement officer; guard and supervise prisoners in the courts or medical facilities; and do related work as required.

Deputy Sheriff II

Under general supervision, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; patrol assigned areas and enforce state and local laws; conduct preliminary investigations of misdemeanor and felony crimes; perform bailiff duties; and do related work as required.  This is the fully trained, working level classification in the Deputy Sheriff series.  Positions in this classification require previous experience and training in patrol, detective or civil divisions.



EXAMPLE OF DUTIES



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge Of

Deputy Sheriff I:

General law enforcement practices, including familiarity with the Penal Code, gathering evidence, investigation, interrogation and report writing techniques.

Deputy Sheriff II:

Principles and practices of law enforcement including rules and regulations of a typical Sheriff’s department.  Laws of arrest and rules of evidence; laws applicable to the apprehension and treatment of juveniles and the care and operation of small firearms and other law enforcement equipment.

Skill and Ability to:

Deputy Sheriff I:

  • Learn and perform, under supervision, all aspects of law enforcement work
  • Answers calls for protection of life and property
  • Gather evidence, take statements, make arrests and investigate accidents
  • Serve warrants and civil papers
  • Learn procedures for booking and guarding prisoners
  • Perform desk, jailer and bailiff duties as required
  • Observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places
  • Learn, understand and interpret laws and regulations
  • Learn standard broadcasting procedures of a law enforcement radio system
  • Make independent decisions and adopt quick, effective and reasonable course of action
  • Write clear and comprehensive reports
  • Understand and carry out oral and written direction
  • Physical ability to subdue, apprehend and arrest criminal offenders
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the general public

Deputy Sheriff II:

  • Secure information from witnesses and suspects
  • Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory
  • Patrol assigned areas and answer calls for protection of life and property
  • Serve warrants, civil papers, and make arrests
  • Assist and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in investigations and arrests
  • Keep firearms and other equipment in good working condition
  • Receive, book, search, fingerprint and photograph new prisoners
  • Perform desk, jailer and bailiff duties as required
  • Make independent decisions while working in the field
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
  • Interpret, explain and apply laws and regulations
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Physical ability to subdue, apprehend, and arrest criminal offenders
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the general public

License/Certificates:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.  Applicants must be a citizen of the United States at the time of appointment per California Government Code Section 24103.

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school.  Deputy Sheriff I:  Completion of a P.O.S.T. program.  Deputy Sheriff II:  Completion of a P.O.S.T. program and one(1) year of law enforcement experience.  Monetary compensation is provided for higher education accomplishments such as an Advanced P.O.S.T., Associate, Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degrees.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS



APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS

Interested individuals must submit the following:

  • P.O.S.T. Certificate

Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview.  Following successful completion of the oral interview, a background investigation that will include a computer voice stress test analysis examination will be completed on the top candidates. All applicants who successfully complete the background investigation will then be scheduled for a psychological examination. In addition, a fit for duty medical examination will be completed. Successful completion of all phases of the County’s testing process is required.

NOTES

Recruitment/Retention Incentive:

  • $2,000 upon completion of 1st year
  • $1,500 upon completion of 2nd year
  • $1,500 upon completion of 3rd year

Relocation Incentive:

$2,000 upon hire if relocating to Calaveras County from outside a 50 mile radius.
